Onumba.com, Nigeria ———- Meet Chérif Kounta, the 14 year old African boy building an AI platform that could change how people learn, work, and start businesses. While many teenagers are still figuring out their interests, Chérif is developing FasoNova, an AI platform that goes beyond answering questions. Its mission mode guides users through their goals step by step. Want to start a small business? It can estimate your costs, list what you need, and suggest suppliers. Are you a student? It helps you understand the method before checking your work instead of simply giving you the answer. Interesting, right?
But here is where the story gets even more interesting. Chérif’s journey started when he was just four years old, after his father brought home a tablet. By 10, he had built an interactive calendar. At 11, he developed TruFinder, an AI tool designed to fight fake news. Then, at 13, he started working on FasoNova. The name means “new Faso” and represents his vision of a new Burkina Faso driven by technology. He has also made privacy a priority, with the platform designed to encrypt users’ data, store it on private servers, and prevent its use to train other AI models.
What makes his story even more inspiring is that he is doing all this without outside funding. His parents have supported his training and equipment, while he balances school with his passion for technology. He reportedly spends about two hours daily on the project during the school year and four hours every Saturday. FasoNova is available at fasonova.vercel.app, although it is not yet on the major app stores. He is currently looking for partners, including universities, research centres, and developers, to help him take the project further.
Here is what I want you to take away from this story. You do not have to wait until you are older, richer, or have everything figured out before you start building something meaningful. Chérif started with what he had, developed his skills, and kept improving. You may not be building an AI platform, and that is perfectly fine. You could be learning a digital skill, starting a small business, or creating something that solves a problem in your community. The important thing is to start. The future belongs not only to those who imagine what is possible but also to those who are willing to build it.
